Aboard the Legacy, the adventure began almost instantly. We had barely left Mission Bay when a call crackled over the radio that there are birds working the surface and a possible spout just outside the harbor entrance. We headed straight for it, excitement building with every swell. Luck was on our side. The moment we arrived, the whale resurfaced as if it had been waiting for us, lingering nearby and giving us multiple close, spectacular looks. As if that wasn’t enough, a stampede of common dolphins burst onto the scene, racing alongside the boat in a thrilling rush of energy and spray. It was the kind of unforgettable outing where the ocean seemed determined to show off.
