Persistence Pays Off

Nice weather and decent visibility gave us high hopes as we departed from Mission Bay this morning. As we have seen the past few days large congregations of pelagic birds led us to a small group of common dolphins that we were able to observe feeding on a small school of anchovies. Soon all that was left was the glitter of scales in the water as the dolphins moved on in search of more feed. We made our way South with plans to try and intercept a group of humpbacks that was down near the Mexican border, but we were not able to come across them before we had to start heading back North. However, we were able to get a couple quick looks at the ever elusive Minke whale. On our way North we spent a little time with a large group of common dolphins that was in travel mode and everyone enjoyed a good bow riding show along with some playful acrobatics. At that point we were full cruise for Mission Bay and already a little behind schedule when several Humpback spouts were spotted a couple miles in towards Point Loma. We raced to their last location and made our best guess as to their course and speed. We crossed our fingers that we would get another look. Thankfully after a ten minute dive two large mature Humpbacks surfaced right next to the boat. Everyone enjoyed listening to the sound of their deep breaths before they sent us home with a couple high fluke dives.
